Balanced Scoring Keys Comets’ Win

DES MOINES, Iowa – Boyden-Hull held on in a back-and-forth battle with South Hamilton, Jewell (22-2) to take a thrilling 62-59 semifinal on Wednesday and advance to its eighth state title game.

The third-seeded Comets (24-2) held slim leads in the second half of a Class 2A contest that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, but made one final stop as time expired and South Hamilton senior Conner Hill’s 3-point attempt rimmed off. Hill scored a game-high 29 points, including 20 before halftime, and led a Hawk offense that feasted on the turnovers forced by the defense. Boyden-Hull was turned over an uncharacteristic 21 times, giving South Hamilton belief in its first title game berth since 1988.

But the Comets used their balanced attack and disruptive length well enough to win yet again at the state tournament – their eighth straight victory at Wells Fargo Arena – over the No. 2 seed in 2A. Keyton Moser led the Comets with 19 points, while Beau De Jongh added 11 points and 12 boards.

Boyden-Hull will play for its fourth state championship on Friday at 4:10 p.m. South Hamilton will play in its first consolation game at 11:55 a.m. on Thursday.
