Boyden Hull and Sheldon Split Basketball Doubleheader

basketballSheldon Iowa — Sheldon and Boyden Hull split a Siouxland Conference doubleheader at Orab Gym Friday night. The Comets took the girls game 48-38 with the boys game going to Sheldon 58-55.

The Comets were up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter and 19-9 at halftime of the girls game. At the end of the third quarter the lead was 27-19. Sheldon got to within six in the fourth quarter only to see Boyden Hull regain control and go on to win it 48-38.

Taylor Weber of the Orabs was the games top scorer with 14 points all in the second half. Boyden Hull was led by Erika Pottebaum with 13. With the win the Comets are 4-8 on the year and 4-7 in the conference. Sheldon falls to 3-10 on the season and 2-9 in the conference.

In the boys game the Comets led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter and 36-31 at halftime. Sheldon pulled even at 42-42 at the end of the third quarter before taking the lead midway through the fourth quarter. Sheldon knocked down some key free throws late and got a big three from Tyler Merley as they held on to win their 9th in a row 58-55.

The Orabs put three players in double figures led by Jaden Kleinhesslink with a game high 19 points. Kyle Boerhave added 18 and Ryan Van Marel hit for a dozen. Kleinhesslink and Boerhave combined to go 6-of-9 at the line in the fourth quarter. Boyden Hull was led by Marcus Rens with 15 points followed by Shane Solberg with 14.

With the win Sheldon is 11-1 on the year and 9-1 in the Siouxland Conference. The Comets stand at 5-6 for the year and 5-5 in the conference.

Up next for Sheldon will be a Tuesday trip to Sioux Center. Boyden Hull will be at Okoboji come Tuesday night.
