Boyden Hull Rock Valley – Sergeant Bluff Luton Football Preview

The quarterfinal round of the 3A football playoffs brings another regular season rematch for the Nighthawks as they square off for a second time against Sergeant Bluff Luton.

In a week 7 district match up the Nighthawks claimed a 35-10 win at Sergeant Bluff. Boyden Hull Rock Valley #3 in Class 3A brings a 10-0 record into the contest at Rock Valley. The Warriors are ranked # 8 in the Radio Iowa Poll with a record of 8-2. In the first round of the playoffs the Nighthawks downed Sioux Center  in Hull 48-9. Sergeant Bluff got the the quarterfinals with a 44-14 home win over Algona.

In the first meeting at Sergeant Bluff the Warriors were without two way player and Iowa State signee Jacob Imming. Despite his availability this week  Head Coach Corey Brandt  doesn’t see a lot of change in the SBL approach because of quarterback Tyler Smith.

In the playoffs the physical aspect is usually talked about first but the mental aspect can be just as important.

Both teams have planned the work now it’s time to work the plan.

Nighthawks senior quarterback Tanner Te Slaa has passed for 1650 yards and 23 touchdowns going 85 of 124 on his passing attempts. His leading receiver is senior Landyn Van Kekerix with 21 receptions for 539 yards and 11 scores. He also leads the team in rushing with 45 carries for 529 yards and 15 touchdowns.

On defense Van Kekerix is the leading tackler with 49 including 7.5 for a loss and 1.5 sacks. He also has 1 fumble recovery and 1 interception.

Sergeant Bluff Luton’s offense is led by 2000 yard passer Tyler Smith. The junior has hit on 157 of 242 attempts for 2245 yards and 23 touchdowns. He’s also the leading rusher with 100 attempts for 516 yards and another 7 touchdowns. His leading receiver is senior Tyler Schenkelberg with 53 receptions for 923 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Iowa State signee Jacob Imming leads the defense. The senior has 47 tackles including 10 for a loss and 3 fumble recoveries.
