Central Lyon Sweeps Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — Central Lyon swept a Siouxland Conference basketball double header at Sheldon Tuesday night. The Lion girls ranked #8 in the latest 2A poll posted a 66-52 win while it took overtime to decide the boys game. The Lions got the sweep with a 63-56 win.

In the girls game Central Lyon led at all the breaks up 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 36-21 at halftime. At the end of three Desta Hoogendorn hit a trey as time expired to put the Lions up 55-37. They went on to win it 66-52.

Sheldon got a game high 20 points from Maliah Kleinhesselink including 4 three point buckets and 18 from Brooklyn Grady. Central Lyon put four players in double figures. Hayden Heimenson and Desta Hoogendorn hit for 17 each. Addison Klosterbuer knocked down 4 triples on the way to 15 points while Regan Van Wyhe added 11.

With the win Central Lyon moves to 14-2 on the year and 12-1 in the conference. Sheldon is now 4-14 on the year and 3-11 in the Siouxland.

 

The boys contest featured a number of twists and turns that took overtime to decide. At the end of the first quarter the Lions were up 18-13. At the end of the first half a put back by Andrew Austin as time expired gave Central Lyon a 27-25 lead. At the end of the third quarter it was Sheldon’s turn with Blake Radke hitting a three with time winding down to give the Orabs a 39-36 lead. At the end of regulation it was all even at 51-51.

In OT Mason Gerleman led the Lions to the win hitting a pair of threes and going 2-of-2 at the free throw line for 8 points. Cooper Spiess hit a field goal to put Central Lyon up by 5 with time running out. Spiess added the exclamation point with a two hand jam for the final points of the contest and a 63-56 win.

Zach Lutmer led all scorers with 26. Gerleman had 16 with half of his points coming in OT and 12 of them from behind the arc. They were joined by Spiess with 15 points. Sheldon was led by Shane Brouwer with a 19 point night with 12 coming in the second half and 5 in overtime. Tye Sudbeck knocked down 14 with Kaleb Ackerman hitting for 10.

With the win Central Lyon is 9-6 on the year and 8-5 in conference games. Sheldon saw a 6 game winning streak come to an end. The Orabs are 8-9 on the year and 5-8 in the conference.

Up next for Sheldon will be a trip to West Lyon Friday night while the Lions host Okoboji.
