Cherokee off to 4-0 Start with win over Sheldon

footballCherokee Iowa — The Cherokee Braves took advantage of Orab fumbles on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead with 7:34 to play in the first quarter.

Cherokee went up 20-0 with an Adam Cedar to Tyler Faist 8 yard pass with :34 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Braves Mason Pitts picked off an Orab pass late in the first half and it was Cedar to Pitts for a 49 yard score. The kick by Charlie Wych made it 27-0 Cherokee with :06 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Braves got on the board again with 1:59 left in the half when an interception by the Braves at their own 12 eventually became a 20 yard touchdown pass from Cedar to Micheal Kerweg. The kick made it 34-0 at halftime.

Sheldon broke the scoring drought in the third quarter when Jaden Kleinhesselink found Colby Kleinhesselink for a 7 yard touchdown pass that capped a 74 yard drive. Joe Weppler went in for the 2 point conversion to make the score 34-8 with 3:38 to go in the third.

Cherokee answered with a 26 yard touchdown pass from Cedar to Pitts. The extra point made it 41-8 Braves with :45 seconds left in the third quarter.

Sheldon got back into the end zone as time expired in the third quarter as Joe Weppler scored on a 34 yard run. Parker Nissen added the extra point and the lead was cut to 41-15 with the fourth quarter yet to be played.

Midway through the fourth quarter Cedar found Trey Valentine for a 14 yard score. The kick was no good and the lead was 47-15.

Sheldon would score a pair of touchdowns in the final minutes. Colby Kleinhesselink returned the Cherokee kick off to the Braves 32 yard line. From there Jaden found Colby for a touchdown pass and the 2 point conversion by Colby made the score 47-23.

The Orabs wrapped up the scoring when they took over on downs at the Cherokee 20 yard line. Joe Weppler finished the short field drive with his second touchdown of the night to make the final score 47-29.

With the win Cherokee is off to a 4-0 start 2-0 in the district while the Orabs are at 0-4.
