Sheldon Iowa — Top ranked Boyden Hull remained unbeaten With a 60-48 Substate win over OABCIG at Sheldon. With the win the Comets are on to Wells Fargo Areana the week of March 8th with a chance to defend their Class 2A title.
The Comets led at all the breaks up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. The lead was pushed to 29-19 at halftime as Tanner Te Slaa converted a four-point play and Marcus Kelderman knocked down a three.
In the third quarter the Falcons offense came alive behind Beckett De Jean. He hit 11 of his 14 points as OABCIG closed to within 38-36 at the end of the quarter. After the game Comets head coach Bill Francis said the turning point was withstanding the run that came to end the third quarter and start the fourth.
Cooper De Jean took center stage in the fourth scoring 12 of his team high 21 points to keep the Falcons in it. The Comets were able to break open a close game late as Tanner Te Slaa hit 13 of his game high 27 in the final quarter. Free throw shooting was another key to the win as Boyden Hull closed the game converting 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Marcus Kelderman joined Te Slaa in double figures with a 17 point night.
With the core of last years championship team back experience in big games was a big advantage.
While the prime time players keep coming up big for his team Francis feels it’s the complementary players that make this years team special.
The Comets will wear the target at Wells Fargo Arena as the defending 2A champs but that’s ok.
Boyden Hull will take a 23-0 record and 31 game winning streak to Des Moines. The Falcons end the season at 21-2.
