Dordt Baseball Splits With Hastings

Sioux Center, Iowa — The Dordt Defender Baseball team split with Hastings Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.

The Dordt Defender baseball team lost a narrow 3-2 decision to Hastings on Saturday afternoon in GPAC baseball action.

The Broncos got three in the third and the Defenders answered with a run in the home half of the third when Logan Cline singled in Parker Hamann. Dordt got another in the fourth when Nick Hamilton led off the inning with a homerun.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth Dordt got a Nick Hamilton single with one out and John Emerson singled to get him to third. A stolen base put two runners in scoring position but two strikeouts ended the inning and the Defenders were retired in order in the seventh.

Gyeongju Kim took the hard luck loss with seven strikeouts and three hits allowed. Kim became single season strikeout leader at Dordt and has 80 this season.

Nick Hamilton and John Emerson each had two hits and Dordt had a 9-3 hits advantage.

Dordt’s lone extra base hit was a homerun by Hamilton.

Dordt and Hastings took the field in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, winning 8-7 in 11 innings.

Hastings scored the opening run in the top of the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead, but it was Logan Cline who hit a grand slam to left in the bottom of the inning on a 2-0 count. The slam scored Lucas Nelson, Parker Hamann, and Andrew Pullar.

Dordt added on to their lead in the 3rd as Lucas Nelson hit a triple and later scored on a passed ball.

In the following inning, Chase Edwards hit an RBI single to make the score 6-3 for the Defenders.

With the score 6-4 in the top of the 8th inning, Hastings regained the lead after their first three batters reached, loading the bases. Race Traynor then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, followed by a fielder’s choice that brought in another run, and an RBI single from Cole Staab to give the Broncos a 7-6 lead.

The Defenders were able to tie the game on a sacrifice fly to left from John Emerson, but left a runner on base, sending the game to extras.

Dordt loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th inning, sparked by a leadoff single from Austin Pullar. Logan Cline and Chase Edwards both singled, and Nick Hamilton drew a base on balls to win the game for the Defenders.

Dordt will play at Mount Marty for a doubleheader next weekend Friday, April 23. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm in Yankton, SD.
