Dordt Softball Drops Two On Saturday

Aberdeen, South Dakota — Dordt left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th, falling to Dickinson State 2-1 in the fifth game of their neutral-site weekend.

The Blue Hawks were first on the board as Madison Stephens hit a triple and then scored on an error in the top of the 2nd.

The bottom of the inning saw the Defenders tie the game on Emma Groen’s home run to left, her first of the early season.

In the top of the 3rd, Dickinson State had two runners on, but Karli Olsen threw out a runner on a steal attempt and the Dordt defense kept their opponent from scoring on a ground out.

Dickinson State regained the lead in the 4th, as a leadoff single allowed Dallis Mitchell to pick up the RBI to make it a 2-1 game.

The Defenders were threatening to score in their last at-bats as Jessica Flaherty hit a pinch hit single followed by a base hit from Jessica Oules. Karli Olsen drew a walk to keep the bases loaded, but Dickinson State recorded the final out to pick up a 2-1 win.

Dordt and Minnesota-Crookston played in the final game at the dome in Aberdeen, as the Golden Eagles used a five-run first inning to build up their lead.

Crookston opened their half of the first with back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 2-0 with no outs. The Eagles then used a double-steal to extend their lead to three. A two-run home run followed, making the score 5-0.

With the score 6-0 in the top of the 4th, Karli Olsen hit a leadoff single into center field to get on base. Emma Groen was next to the plate, hitting a two-run home run to center, helping Dordt cut into the lead. Crookston responded in the next inning by sending in their runner from third to score on a base hit.

Neither team compiled offense through the next two innings until Dordt’s Emma Brown singled in the bottom of the 7th and later advanced on a wild pitch. Jessica Oules moved her over to third and Kenzie Cunard sent Brown across home plate on a single to left field. The Defenders left two runners in scoring position as their two-out rally attempt was stifled by the Golden Eagles.
