Sioux Center, Iowa — The Dordt Defenders lost a 4-2 decision to the College of Saint Mary in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, April 23.
The Flames took advantage of a pair of walks and an error to get one run in the first inning and then added a run in the fourth with another two errors factoring in to the unearned run. The Flames then forged ahead 4-0 with two more in the top of the sixth inning.
Dordt broke through with a run on three hits in the sixth inning when Ivy Terpstra doubled and Kenzie Cunard scored but the inning ended with Dordt getting no more and the bases loaded.
Dordt worked out of trouble in the seventh inning on defense and then had runners on second and third with no one out. After an out the Defenders got a single by Karli Olsen to put runners at the corners but a grounder to second resulted in a double play to end the game.
Abby Kraemer took the loss on the mound with one earned run surrendered on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Olsen and Terpstra each had two hits.
Terpsta and Jessica Oules each had doubles for Dordt’s only extra base hits.
Dordt had a 9-8 hits advantage but committed four errors.
College of Saint Mary earned the sweep in Saturday’s doubleheader against Dordt, as the Defenders dropped game two by a score of 3-1.
Dordt had an opportunity early on as Karli Olsen drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the 1st and was later advanced to third after Chandler Schemper’s base hit and a fielder’s choice. With two runners in scoring position, however, the Flames forced a groundout to end the inning.
The Flames scored first in the 2nd as Macy Homes hit a double to right center before a walk and a single loaded the bases. Marissa McGargill then drew a walk to allow the first run to come home. Later in the inning, Rylee Scholl was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 2-0.
The Defenders made a dent in the Flames’ lead in the bottom half of the 2nd when Kenzie Cunard reached on an error that allowed Hailey Wilken to cross home plate and make the score 2-1.
College of Saint Mary went on to increase their lead on Garcia’s RBI single in the 3rd, going up 3-1.
Dordt left runners on second base in both the 6th and 7th innings but was unable to score as the Flames left with the win.
