Dordt Softball Gets Friday Sweep

The Dordt Defender softball team won its third game of the week with a 6-2 win over Hastings in game one of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon, April 8. The Defenders made it a sweep with an 11-8 win in game two.

Dordt threatened in the first but was unable to get a run after a leadoff double and walk. Hastings had a threat of its own in the third with a walk and a batter reaching on an error but came away empty as well.

The Defenders broke through after another missed chance in the fourth when Jessica Oules led off the fifth with  a single and stole second. Kenzie Cunard singled to put runners at the corners and Karli Olsen worked to load the bases with a walk.

Chandler Schemper reached on an error that scored two and Ivy Terpstra’s double with two outs scored the third and fourth runs of the fifth frame for a 4-0 lead.

Hastings responded with two runs on three hits in the home half of the fifth but Dordt had an answer with Olsen singling in a run and Schemper again pushed a run across after reaching by error.  Dordt threatened again with two baserunners in the seventh but came up with no runs.  Hastings did get a double in the seventh but wasn’t able to get a run in with Abby Kraemer getting her 11th strikeout of the game to end the contest.

THE NUMBERS

Dordt had a 9-5 hits advantage.

The teams combined for seven errors with Dordt committing three and Hastings four.

Kenzie Cunard was 3-3 with a run scored and had a double and two singles.

Olsen scored twice and Terpstra had a double and single with two runs batted in.

Oules had two singles and scored twice.

Kraemer struck out 11 and walked two with two earned runs allowed and five hits given up.

GAME TWO

The Defenders scored seven unanswered runs in game two of their doubleheader against Hastings and won an 11-8 decision in come from behind fashion.

Dordt scored first with Ella Koster belting a homerun that scored Ivy Terpstra after she had led off the inning with a single. Dordt left two runners stranded as the inning came to a close.

Hastings answered with a six run third inning on six hits and played from in front as Dordt chipped into the lead.

An error led to Jessica Oules scoring in the fourth inning but Hastings answered with a two run homerun in the bottom half of the same frame.

Dordt rallied in the sixth inning with three runs on four hits including a Cunard double that scored Oules and Koster and Emma Groen singled in a four urns that included a Terpstra double that got two runs in and Emma Groen singled and knocked in two runs when the ball was misplayed into two runs.

With the scored tied at 8-8 the Defenders got a single by Kenzie Cunard that scored Oules and Olsen homered for insurance for an 11-8 lead. The hosts were retired in order in the seventh to give Dordt the sweep.

THE NUMBERS

Kenzie Cunard led the 16-hit attack for the Defenders while going 4-5 at the plate with three runs batted in.

Olsen was 2-5 with a homerun and single and three runs batted in.

Schemper, Terpstra and Koster all had two hits with Koster knocking in two with her homerun and she scored twice.

Jessica Oules was 3-4 with three runs scored.

Abby Kraemer won her 10th decision with a win in relief.  She allowed on hits and struck out one in two innings of relief.

Hailey Wilkin also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Dordt is now 6-2 in the GPAC and 16-9-1 overall. Hastings is 3-7 in the league and 17-18 overall. Dordt will face Doane on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in a doubleheader.
