Dordt Softball Gets Sweep Of Avila

Kansas City, Missouri — The Dordt softball team got the doubleheader sweep of Avila in Kansas City Saturday afternoon.

Dordt needed late inning heroics to forge a 3-2 win over Avila (Missouri) on Saturday afternoon in game one of their doubleheader in Kansas City.

Dordt got a run in the first when Kenzie Cunard scored on a wild pitch after reaching initially with a bunt single.

Avila scored two in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homerun by Brooke Day and the two teams went the next three and a half innings without a hit.

Dordt eventually got its offense going in the seventh with Hailey Heeringa reaching on a walk and she gave way to pinch runner Jessica Flaherty. A sacrifice bunt put Flaherty on second and an error allowed runners at the corners. After a hit batsman Ivy Terpstra delivered a bases loaded single that scored Flaherty and Chandler Schemper.

Abby Kraemer worked an uneventful seventh to finish the game.

Kraemer got the win and allowed three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Terpstra and Cunard had Dordt’s two hits and three other Defenders had walks.

Dordt grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it for a 6-2 win to sweep Avila (Missouri) on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City.

Dordt got a run in the third inning with Jessica Oules reaching on a single and stole second. Kenzie Cunard singled to knock in Oules. Dordt added two more in the fourth with Jessica Flaherty doubling in Hailey Heeringa and Emma Veenstra for a 3-0 lead.

The 3-0 lead stood until the bottom of the fifth with Avila getting two runs on two hits but Dordt had an answer in the sixth with three runs on two hits. The big blow was a Oules single with the bases loaded to get two runs in and Dordt held in spite of Avila getting five base runners in the final two innings but could get anything across.

Dordt got two hits each from Jessica Oules and Hailey Heeringa and Oules had two runs batted in and Heeringa had two doubles.

Rachel Evavold went the distance on the mound with five strikeouts and walked four and scattered seven hits.

Dordt is 7-3 and will resume its season in Florida next Saturday.
