Dordt Softball Splits With Avila

Kansas City, Missouri — Dordt pitcher Abby Kramer threw a no-hitter as the Defenders picked up a 7-0 road win in game one of Monday’s doubleheader.

The Defenders scored their first run of the game in the top of the 3rd as Jessica Oules led off the inning with a single. Oules then advanced to third before Karli Olsen picked up a sacrifice fly RBI that sent Oules home to give Dordt a 1-0 lead.

Avila had their first baserunner in the 3rd, reaching on a throwing error before Kramer struck out the fourth batter to end the inning.

The 5th inning saw the Defenders create breathing room, scoring two runs in the frame. Cassie Van Otterloo drew a leadoff walk, advancing to second on an Oules bunt attempt. With two outs, Olsen reached first on an error that allowed Van Otterloo to score. Emma Groen followed by hitting a single to left, allowing Olsen to come around to score.

Chandler Schemper scored in the top of the 6th to give Dordt a 4-0 lead coming from Brooklyn Van Oort’s RBI.

After scoring three runs in the top of the 7th, Dordt made a defensive stand, fighting off the two-out walk to help Kramer record the no-hitter.

Dordt hit .385 as a team

Avila used a 2-RBI triple in the bottom of the 9th inning to split today’s doubleheader, defeating Dordt 12-11.

The Defenders got out to a quick start as Kenzie Cunard took the first at-bat to center field for a single, followed up with a two-run home run by Karli Olsen to give Dordt a 2-0 win.

With the game tied 1-1 in the 2nd, the Defenders took the lead on a double steal that saw Ivy Terpstra cross the plate when Chandler Schemper stole second.

Avila scored seven runs in their half of the 2nd, opened by a leadoff home run from Emily Walton.

Dordt answered after falling behind 8-3 by scoring three runs of their own in their next at-bats. Ivy Terpstra hit a double to deep left center, allowing Brooklyn Van Oort and Aurora Tyson to score. The Defenders added another run as Chandler Schemper hit an infield single that sent Ivy Terpstra home from third.

The Defenders took a 10-8 lead in the top of the 4th, as Van Oort drew a walk with the bases loaded to begin the inning. Emma Groen then scored when Avila opted for a fielder’s choice but then committed an error to help Tyson give Dordt a 9-8 advantage. Schemper picked up her second RBI of the game as Van Oort scored.

Avila managed to tie the game and send it into extra innings, where Kennedee Meier hit a walk-off triple to win the game.
