Sioux Center, Iowa — The Dordt Softball team opened conference play with a sweep over Dakota Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.
Dordt never trailed and secured a 6-1 win over Dakota Wesleyan in GPAC play this afternoon in Sioux Center.
Dordt got a run in the first inning on a Rachel Evavold single and the Tigers came back with a run in the top of the second while taking advantage of a Dordt error.
Dordt unlocked the tie with a two run fourth inning when Hailey Heeringa doubled and Rachel Evavold followed with a double to score a run and Emma Veenstra added a double for Dordt to get another run across.
Dordt added a run on two hits in the fifth and then ended the scoring with a two run sixth inning with Kenzie Cunard singling in a run and Hannah Sikkema also had a run scoring single.
While Dordt’s offense was pounding out 13 hits Abby Kraemer allowed an unearned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Cunard was 3-4 with three singles and three runs scored.
Jessica Oules, Heeringa, Evavold and Veenstra all had two hits with all but Oules getting a single and a double. Oules had a pair of singles and Evavold knocked in two.
Dordt overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning to score the next ten runs and won a 10-2 decision and earned the sweep in GPAC play to open the conference season.
Dordt allowed two unearned runs to start the game and didn’t get the two runs back until the bottom of the second inning when Hailey Heeringa was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Rachel Evavold single put runners on the corners and Evavold eventually stole second base. After a strikeout and lineout Brooklyn Van Oort reached on an error that allowed Heeringa to score. Emma Veenstra followed with a single that scored the tying run.
Dordt unlocked the tie with a two-run single by Veenstra that got Erin Bredemus and Chandler Schemper across after a sacrifice fly. Three more runs in the fifth off an Evavold triple, a Bredeumus double and a Chandler Schemper double made it 7-2 and Dordt ended the game with a three run, five hit sixth inning.
Dordt had a 12-4 hits advantage with Rachel Evavold delivering a 3-4 day with two runs scored and two runs batted in with a triple and two singles.
Veenstra, Bredemus and Oules all had two hits and Dordt totaled five extra base hits as a team with three triples and two doubles. Veenstra knocked in three runs.
Evavold struck out two and walked one with four hits allowed and both runs were unearned.
Dordt is now 2-0 overall and 13-11 in the GPAC. Dakota Wesleyan is 0-2 and 8-10.
Dordt will travel to Orange City to face Northwestern on Thursday, March 25 in GPAC play.
