Dordt Track And Field Coach Heynen Earns GPAC Men’s Coach Of The Year

Sioux Center, Iowa — Craig Heynen, Dordt University head track and field coach, has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Indoor Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Heynen won the honor after leading the Defenders to the program’s first ever GPAC Indoor Track and Field Championship on February 19-20 in Sioux Center. Heynen also was named GPAC Coach of the Year in 2012 and has been at Dordt since 2008.

The Defenders won the 2021 title with 184 points one year after taking runner-up honors in the GPAC Championship Meet.

“Craig is very deserving of this award,” said Dordt University athletic director Ross Douma. “Craig and his staff administer a comprehensive program and their success is a byproduct of recruiting talented student-athletes who have a heart for our school’s mission. How Craig sets, oversees and implements the program’s goals is an example of athletics being done well.”

The Defender men won two relay titles and three individual titles at the meet. Dordt now prepares for the NAIA National Championship in Yankton, South Dakota beginning with the women’s competition on March 3 and the men on March 4.
