Hastings, Nebraska — The Dordt Defenders moved their GPAC record to 6-6 this season with a 3-2 match win over the Hastings Broncos on the road Friday night.
Dordt rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to win a tight set four and ran away with set five to improve to 14-7 overall. Set one was a marathon with 30 ties and Dordt had seven set point serves but were unable to convert and dropped the 40-38 decision.
Set two had the two teams tied 10-10 before a Megan Raszler service ace followed by back to back blocks gave Dordt a 13-10 lead. The lead expanded to 16-11 and was never less than four with Dordt winning 25-17. The third set swung to Hastings’ favor on a 3-0 Bronco run that turned a 20-18 deficit into a 21-20 Hastings lead. Corrina Timmermans tied it at 21 with a kill but four straight by the Broncos gave them a 2-1 match lead and a 25-21 win.
Hastings appeared ready to finish the match in four when it took a 13-9 lead but Dordt battled back with a Grace Langemeier kill getting Dordt to within 15-14 the outside hitter followed moments later with back to back kills to keep the set tied at 16-16 and 17-17. Dordt seized the lead with an Ava Van Soelen block and Jessi Franken followed with a kill. Hastings got it back to tied at 19, 20 and 21 but Dordt never trailed and won it 25-23.
The Defenders took much of the suspense out of set five with Grace Langemeier recording three of the first four Dordt points in set five for a 4-0 lead and Hastings never got closer than three as Dordt won 15-8.
Dordt hit for a .265 kill efficiency and had 20 attack errors to 37 by the Broncos.
Dordt had a 10-5 service ace advantage but was charged with 14 service errors . The Defenders got 16 points on blocks while Hastings had 10.
Grace Langemeier had a career high 18 kills and Corrina Timmermans had 15 as Dordt’s outside hitters combined for 33 kills.
Jessi Franken had 12 kills and Alli Timmermans 10.
Megan Raszler put up 30 assists and Campbell Marshall had 27.
Erica Bousema recorded 23 digs and Danielle Vande Voort had two solo and four assisted blocks.
Dordt is 14-7 overall and 6-6 in the league while Hastings slides to 14-11 and 5-8.
Dordt will face Doane on Saturday at 5:00 pm. The junior varsity match will start at 3:30.
