Sioux City, Iowa — Dordt travels to Morningside to play junior varsity and varsity volleyball at 6:00/7:30 respectively in Sioux City, Iowa on Wednesday, August 25. The matches will be played at the Allee Gymansium in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center on Morningside’s campus.
The Morningside Mustangs are 3-1 this season after wins over Friends (Kansas), Oklahoma Wesleyan, Avila (Kansas) and a loss to Kansas Wesleyan last weekend. The three wins were all by 3-0 counts and Morningside posted a 12.08-10.54 kills per match advantage during the weekend. Morningside’s attack efficiency was .139 over the four matches and it held opponents to .099. The other big stat disparity came on ace serves where the Mustangs averaged 2.46 per set while opponents had 1.62.
Sydney Marlow leads the team with a 3.31 kills per set average and Claire Wilson is right behind with 2.46 per outing. Marlow also has a team high eight assists and 2.77 digs per contest. Bridget Smith accounts for 5.08 assists per set and Gillian De Paauw is at 3.38 assists per outing.
Dordt leads the series 33-19 and the teams have split 24 matches played in Sioux City.
The two teams split their meetings last season with Dordt winning 3-0 early in the year and Morningside trimmed the Defenders later 3-1. The Morningside win halted a 12 match Dordt winning streak in the series dating back to 2012.
Dordt won the September 12 decision 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 with Jessi Franken accounting for 10 kills and Brenna Krommendyk had nine and Karsyn Winterfeld and Corrina Timmermans each had eight kills. Caitlyn Mackovicka led Morningside with nine kills and Dordt had a 7-2 advantage in points off of blocks.
Morningside then turned the tables on the Defenders on October 7 with a 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22 win behind 15 kills by Krista Zenk and 14 for Kaelyn Giefer. Krommendyk again had 15 kills and Alli Timmermans and Franken each had 13 kills.
Dordt will play four matches at a classic hosted by the College of Idaho this Friday and Saturday while Morningside is scheduled to play four matches as well in a classic hosted by Missouri Valley.
