Following a week away from competition, an opportunity for back-to-back wins for the Defenders was stopped by Concordia, who earned their fourth win in a row.
Concordia took a narrow lead through the first five minutes of the game, as a made three-pointer off of a turnover gave the Bulldogs a 10-5 lead early on. After a second chance bucket from Erika Feenstra brought Dordt back within three, Concordia scored the next six points to finish out the first quarter.
Dordt chipped away at the lead throughout much of the second quarter after a 28-15 Concordia lead with four minutes to go turned into a 7-0 Dordt run. As the clock winded down toward halftime, Bailey Beckman made a three off of the assist by Jordyn Winterfeld to make the score 31-25 at halftime in favor of Concordia.
Taysha Rushton added to Concordia’s lead on back-to-back made baskets, where the difference maintained 11-13 points through the next three minutes. With 5:31 to go in the third, Ashtyn Veerbeek cut the lead to single digits with a made shot in the paint, and the score became as close as 49-47 in the final minute of the quarter.
The Defenders took the lead with Bailey Beckman’s three, 53-52 with 7:07 to go in regulation. However, Concordia answered with a basket of their own and continued to build their lead for the rest of the contest. Mya Chmielewski’s three-pointer made the score 69-62 late in the game, but Concordia secured the win with two 4/4 trips at the free throw line.
Dordt is now 2-3 and Concordia is 4-3
The Defenders will play their first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 24. Dordt faces Briar Cliff at 6:00 pm in De Witt Gymnasium.
