Dordt Women Fall To Grand View

Des Moines, Iowa — (RV) Dordt University fell to Grand View 82-66 in a non-conference game played tonight at the Sisam Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

The loss drops to the Defenders record to 1-1; Grand View improves to 1-0.

Ashtyn Veerbeek poured in a career-high 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, registering the 15th double-double of her career, to lead the Defenders.

Dordt scored the first six points of the game and led by as many as eight points during a first quarter that resulted in a 23-18 Defenders lead.

Still a five-point game early in the second quarter, Dordt went on an 8-2 run to push its lead to 11 (31-20) following a basket by Faith Van Holland at the 6-minute mark.

Grand View answered with its best scoring run, a 12-2 surge, to cut the Defenders lead down to 33-32 with two minutes left in the first half. The Vikings managed to tie the game at 37 by halftime after a last second three-pointer made by McKenna Monahan.

A basket by Ella Larsen to open the third quarter gave Grand View its first lead but Dordt came back with a 7-0 run, capped by a jumper by Olivia Ritter. Tied at 49 moments later, Karly Gustafson put the Defenders in front one last time (50-49) with a free throw at the 4:15 mark of the third quarter. Grand View closed with a 10-4 run for a 59-54 lead heading into the final frame.

Grand View outscored Dordt 23-8 in the final quarter, limiting the Defenders to just four field goals over the final 10 minutes.

Dordt shot 36% for the game, 20% (3/15) from beyond the arc. The Defenders had the advantage on the glass (47-39) and converted 13-of-17 free throws. Hayden Heimensen, Bailey Beckman and Gustafson all scored five points.

Grand View was led by the duo of Shannon Pisney and McKenna Monahan with 23 and 22 points, respectively. The Vikings shot 43% for the game, 32% (12/37) from beyond the arc.
