Dordt Women Shut Down Mount Marty

Sioux Center, Iowa — The newly-ranked Dordt Defenders moved into second place in the GPAC standings with a resounding win over Mount Marty on Wednesday night. It was the 14th win in a row for the Defenders, who moved their conference record to 14-5.

Dordt got out to a quick start, opening up a 7-2 lead on Karly Gustafson’s basket, forcing a timeout for the Lancers. The Defenders continued to score in bunches, going on a 20-7 run on 63% shooting to finish the quarter.

Mya Chmielewski hit a three nearly three minutes into the second to spark more offense for Dordt, who went on to build their lead to over 20 points on a pair of free throws for Gustafson. The Lancers improved their shooting percentage in the second quarter, but the Defenders continued to maintain a 20+ point advantage going into halftime.

Dordt went on to outscore Mount Marty 22-8 in the third, going 9-15 and leading 69-30 before the fourth.

All 13 Defenders saw the court in the win, as Dordt’s bench scored 30 points.

Dordt shot 50.9% overall and limited Mount Marty to 32.8%

Dordt outrebounded the Lancers 46-27

Hayden Heimensen scored a game-high 14 points

The Defenders had four double-digit scorers – Heimensen, Ashtyn Veerbeek, Karly Gustafson, and Janie Schoonhoven

Faith Van Holland finished with 7 rebounds

Saturday will be the final home game of the regular season for the Defenders, who will be facing the Doane Tigers at 2:00 PM.
