Dordt Women’s Basketball To Play Pair Of Games In Orange City

The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will play a pair of games in Orange City this weekend. The Friday, November 6 game will be against Grand View with tip off at 2:00 and the Saturday, November 7 game will be against Sterling at 12:00 pm.

Grand View is 1-0 this season after beating Dakota State on October 31, 72-62 at Des Moines. Mia Rosener and Maddie Ahlstrom each scored 16 points in the win with Ahlstrom converting 3-7 three-point shots and Shannon Pisney scored 15 points Rosener and Pisney had nine and eight rebounds respectively but Grand View was outrebounded by a 36-35 margin. Casey Carr scored eight and had seven assists. Grand View converted 45.9 percent of its field goals and won despite converting just 8-17 free throws.

Last year’s Grand View team was 17-14 and lost seven of its last eight games after starting the year 16-7. Pisney averaged 12.6 points per game with 5.1 rebounds and converted 60-147 three-point baskets. Rosener averaged 12.1 points per game with 5.1 rebounds and Brianda Bane also returns after averaging 7.3 points per game for a team that averaged 69.5 points per outing while giving up 67.6. Grand View converted 40.7 percent of its field goals and outrebounded teams 40.1-39.5.

Sterling is 1-0 this season after a 60-55 win over Benedictine (Kansas) on October 31. Sterling won that game on the road while limiting the hosts to 30 percent field goal shooting. Sterling’s defense had to be that stout as they were outrebounded 47-36. Benedictine also got to the free throw line 20 times while Sterling only got their 14 times and made seven. Alexis Theis had 25 points and nine rebounds while making 11-18 field goals. Taya Wilson had nine points and six rebounds. Sterling tried just five three-point shots and made one.

Last year’s Sterling team posted a 25-8 record and outscored teams 60-55. Sterling outscored teams 79.2-68.3 last season and outrebounded teams 39-33.2. Sterling also converted 47 percent of its shots last season and 34 percent of its three-point shots. Kylah Comley scored 17.7 points per game with 5.2 rebounds and Bailey Bangert had 15.7 points per game last season with Theus averaging 11.2 points per game last year. Comley led the team in assists with over five per game in 2019-20.

Dordt is 0-1 this season after a loss to Dakota State to open the season on Tuesday night, November 3.

Dordt never got on track and fell 79-60. Dordt had a 49-34 rebounding advantage but converted just 24-75 field goals and 4-24 from the three-point line. Ashtyn Veerbeek scored 14 and had nine rebounds while Karly Gustafson had 11 points with six rebounds. Erika Feenstra scored 10 while Bailey Beckman and McKenna Klecker each had six. Jordyn Winterfeld led the Defenders with four assists.

The Defenders posted a 24-8 record last year and a 15-7 GPAC mark while qualifying for the NAIA Division II National Championship.

Erika Feenstra led last year’s team with 17.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Karly Gustafson scored 9.8 points per game and led the team with 6.5 rebounds per game. Bailey Beckman and Jordyn Winterfeld scored 7.6 and 6.3 points per game for a team that averaged 80.3 points per game while giving up 66.8. Dordt also returns Mya Chmielewski and Bailey Tetzlaff with 5.9 and 5.3 points per game respectively.

The Defenders converted 46.1 percent of their field goal attempts while holding teams to 38.2 percent success. Dordt also outrebounded teams 42.8-33.1.

Dordt is off until Saturday, November 14 when the Defenders face Midland in Fremont, Nebraska. The game will tip off at 2:00 pm.
