Sioux Center, Iowa — Payton Mauldin was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Mauldin won two events in competing in his outdoor season debut, the Dordt Invitational, last weekend. The sophomore crossed the finish line first in the 800m with a time of 1:51.2, third fastest in the NAIA and tops in the conference. Mauldin then anchored the Defenders winning 4×400 relay with a 47.8 split and overall time of 3:19.2, best in the GPAC and ninth in the NAIA.
“Payton’s outdoor opener was very impressive,” commented Dordt Head Coach Craig Heynen. “He ran an aggressive 800m and controlled the race from the start. I was impressed with the maturity he showed in his approach to the race. Considering the fact that there was a pretty stiff breeze, Payton’s time was outstanding at this point of the season. He anchored the 4×400 with a similar approach and it will be exciting to see how he will progress throughout the remainder of the outdoor season.”
