Drake Football Travels to No. 11 Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Drake University football team travels to No. 11 Montana State on Saturday, Sept. 11 for its first road game of the season. Kickoff at Bobcat Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.

Drake (1-0) heads west coming off a dominant season-opening win over West Virginia Wesleyan, 45-3, Sept. 2 at Drake Stadium. The Bulldogs just missed their first shutout in nearly 10 years as Wesleyan kicked a field goal late in the third quarter.

Fifth-year running back Cross Robinson had his first career 100-yard game with 101 rushing yards and he scored one touchdown. Junior running back Caden Meis just missed joining Robinson in the 100-yard club with 98 yards and he added one touchdown.

Junior quarterback Ian Corwin was nearly perfect throwing for 180 yards on 8-of-11 passing with one touchdown in the air and added two rushing touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Colin Howard had 87 receiving yards on just two catches as he hauled in a 79-yard touchdown bomb from Corwin. Sophomore slot receiver Brandon Langdok had four catches for 51 yards and he caught his first touchdown from backup quarterback Luke Bailey. It was Bailey’s first career touchdown pass.

The Bulldogs’ defense held the Bobcats to just 179 total yards on just 53 plays from scrimmage, including just 43 for the Bobcats on the ground. Fifth-year Alex Rogers had the team’s lone turnover, an interception, in the second quarter. Rogers added three tackles as he was named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week in recognition of his performance. It is the first-ever PFL Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Montana State (0-1) dropped its opener at Wyoming Saturday by a narrow score of 19-16. The Montana State Bobcats held a lead late with 2:17 remaining in the game but the Cowboys answered with the go-ahead score with 47 seconds left. Montana State moved the ball to just near midfield before the game clock expired as Wyoming held on for the home win.

Drake and Montana State renew a series that first started in 1940 at Drake Stadium as the Bulldogs won that game 56-0. The other two games in the series were played in 2010 and 2012, respectively, with the Bobcats winning both.

Following Saturday’s game, Drake faces another tough opponent going to No. 9 North Dakota on Sept. 18. Kickoff in Grand Forks, N.D. is scheduled for 4 p.m.
