Drake Football Travels To San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The Drake University football team travels to San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 16 for Pioneer Football League action. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Drake (2-4, 1-2 PFL) heads to the west coast coming off a 28-10 home loss to Dayton at Drake Stadium on Oct. 9. The Bulldogs trailed 21-0 going into the final quarter against the Flyers before they scored 10 unanswered points to cut their deficit to 11 points. Dayton countered with a long touchdown drive to push its lead to 28-10. The Bulldogs had one more drive but it stalled at midfield as the Flyers took over and ran the clock out for their second-straight win in the series.

San Diego (2-4, 2-1 PFL) started the season 0-3 but has won two of its past three contests. The Toreros’ lone loss during that stretch was at league-leader Davidson. San Diego boasts one of the top scoring offenses in PFL play scoring 31.7 points per game. Drake counters with one of the PFL’s top defenses allowing just 18.3 points per game to league foes.

Drake and San Diego are two of the founding programs of the PFL, meeting every season since the start of the league in 1993. The Toreros have won eight-straight in the series, including a gritty 13-10 win at Drake Stadium last spring in the PFL’s spring slate due to the global pandemic. San Diego’s winning streak has helped it seize the lead in the all-time series at 17-11.

Following its trip to San Diego, Drake returns home to Drake Stadium on Oct. 23 when Stetson visits. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
