Dordt University has announced Alex Durbin will serve as the next women’s soccer coach for the Defenders.
Durbin is currently the girls’ soccer coach at Western Christian and previously served as a graduate assistant in the Dordt athletic department and a volunteer women’s soccer assistant for the Defenders.
“I am pleased Alex has accepted the position to be the next women’s soccer coach at Dordt. He has garnered a diverse coaching experience the past four years, and I feel he is well equipped for the challenge of leading this program. I look forward to working with him and observing how he implements the Defender Way within this program,” said Douma.
The 2017 Dordt graduate played four seasons for the men’s soccer team and earned first-team all-GPAC honors at the conclusion of the 2016 season. His 22-goal senior season is the second most in Dordt’s history and is the most goals scored in the program since 1991. He went on to serve as a graduate assistant with the Dordt women’s and men’s volleyball programs under Chad Hanson from 2017-2019 and was part of a staff that guided the Defender women to a NAIA National Championship runner-up finish in 2017 and a NAIA National Championship Quarterfinal finish in 2018.
Durbin’s playing career includes two seasons with the USL League 2 Kaw Valley team in 2018 and 2019 where he served as a team captain for the Sporting Kansas City affiliate at the semi-professional level.
Durbin served as head coach of the Western Christian High School girls soccer team in 2019 and coached the Wolfpack to a 13-4 record with two of those losses coming by one goal.
“Accepting this position was a joy to make and an easy decision. To be able to share my passion for soccer through coaching is a dream come true. What makes accepting this position even better is being able to do it at an institution I have grown to love. Dordt University has offered so much to me so being able to give back to the community is something I look forward to. I’m eager to get in the practice gym with the women and start making strides that will prepare us for next season,” said Durbin.
Durbin has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Master’s of Education in Sports Leadership both from Dordt University.
The Defender women’s soccer team posted a 10-8-1 overall mark and a 7-4-1 GPAC record in 2019 under longtime head coach Bill Elgersma who announced his intention to retire from coaching in October. The Defenders had six seniors on this year’s roster and return over 75 percent of its offense from 2019. Durbin was a volunteer assistant with the 2019 team.
