Gehlen Catholic advanced to the 1A semifinal round Tuesday night as the State Volleyball tournament.
In set 1, Gehlen jumped out to an early lead, but New London battled back. Gehlen was the first to 10, at 10-7. The Jays went on a 5-1 run and had a 16-12 lead. New London was clawing their way back, but the Jays were first to 20 at 20-15, and Gehlen won set 1, 25-19.
New London took control of set 2 early, up 10-2, 18-8, and won 25-13 to tie the match up at 1 set each.
The Jays started set three off much better than set two, and were up early 9-4. Gehlen jumped to an 18-11 lead, but the Tigers came back to within 4 at 21-17. The Jays finished strong with a 25-18 set three win.
Set four looked like set 2. New London jumped out to an early 11-5 lead, then 20-10, and the Tigers took set 4 25-14.
Set 5 was a battle to 15. The Jays were first to 5 at 5-3, then 10-7. New London pulled to within one point at 11-10, and again at 12-11, but Gehlen Catholic prevailed with the 15-12 win.
Gehlen Catholic improves to 25-5, and will at 8 pm on Wednesday
