The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union unanimously approved the restructuring of girls high school golf from five classes to four at its September 7 meeting.
Beginning with the 2018 spring season, the largest 50 schools will compete in Class 4A, the next largest 60 schools will make up the Class 3A field; the next largest 80 schools will compete in Class 2A while Class 1A will be comprised of the remaining schools.
With the change, Class 1A will have 15 first round regional meets (eight teams per site on May 14) while Class 2A will have 10 first round regional meets (eight teams competing at each site on May 14). All four classes will play regional final meets on May 21. The 3A regional meet will have 12 teams competing at each site; each 4A regional final meet will have 10 teams playing at each site. The top two finishers from each regional final site (10 teams in all four classes) will advance to the Iowa Girls State Golf Meet May 29-30. The top eight individual finishers from each regional final will advance to the state meet.
