Van Horne Iowa — The Iowa Basketball Coaches Association’s Academic All State team for 2018 has been released. Ryan Van Marel of Sheldon earned a spot on the team. He is joined area players Peyton Brasser of South O’Brien and Sam Byker of Unity Christian.
The honor goes beyond excellence as a player as it also takes into consideration a commitment to educational and academic excellence as well. The honor is considered by many to have the toughest selection process with the team selected from 130 nominations.
The team members will receive their certificates of recognition on Friday March 9th just before the Class 2A Championship game scheduled to start at 3:45. The team was selected by an IBCA panel from more than 130 applicants.
As a group the team carries the following averages: An ACT composite of 29.5. A scoring average of 15.2 points per game and a GPA of 3.95. In addition 11 team members are either number one or two in their respective senior classes academically.
