Iowa natives and Olympians Karissa Schweizer and Shelby Houlihan bid for U-S road titles Tuesday night at the Drake Relays

Des Moines, Iowa (RI) – Iowa natives Karissa Schweizer and Shelby Houlihan will compete on the streets of downtown Des Moines Tuesday night in the U.S. 1-Mile Road Championship as part of the Grand Blue Mile.

Houlihan is a native of Sioux City and this will be her first attenpt at the U.S. road title. She will also compete in the mile run on Saturday in the stadium.

Houlihan has been competing at the Drake Relays since she was a standout at Sioux City East High School.

Houlihan finished second in the 3,000-meter run at the Worlds Indoor Championships in China last month and this will be her first race of the outdoor season.

Schweizer is a native of Urbandale and finished in the top ten in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs last year at the Paris Olympics. She will also be making her first run at the road mile title.

Schweizer on running two races this week. she will compete in the mile run in the Stadium on Saturday.

For Schweizer this will be her first race of the year.

Schweizer has been looking for a chance to return to Drake for several years.

Defending women’s champ Rachel McArthur will be in the field. After setting a course record a year ago Vincent Ciattei will attempt to defend his title in the men’s race.
