Iowa State players preview Houston and the start of Big 12 play

Ames, Iowa – Iowa State defensive lineman Domonique Orange says the 18th ranked Cyclones are acting like the underdog as they get ready for their Big 12 opener at Houston. The Cyclones are 3-0 and a nearly two touchdown favorite against a Cougar squad that is 1-3 after a 34-0 loss at Cincinnati.

Orange says the Cyclones are going to Houston with a chip on their shoulder.

Iowa State ranks ninth in the country in points allowed, but Orange says the Big 12 race is a new challenge.

The defense is preparing to face two quareterbacks. Senior Donovan Smith and sophomore Zeon Chriss both played in the loss to Cincinnati.

Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht says the Cyclones are focused on their Big 12 opener and not the big picture. With a 3-0 record and a number 18 national ranking the Cyclones are considered an early contender for the new expanded college football playoff. They are a nearly two touchdown favorite heading into the league-opener.

Becht says the Cougars showed their potential in a near upset of Oklahoma on the road.

Becht says the Houston defense makes it a priority to create turnovers.

Becht says the Cyclone running game made a lot of progress during nonconference play.
