Korver, Smith Qualify For Nationals For NWC

Northwestern College men’s track and field athletes qualified for nationals in three events and won five events at the Red Raider Open held at this past weekend at DeValois Stadium.

Calvin Korver set a stadium record and met the provisional mark with a first place finish in the decathlon. Korver totaled 6,651 points, currently the second most points in the NAIA, and over 300 points better than the previous record set by Jordan Strofaci in 2015. The sophomore finished first in seven of the 10 events, including the high jump where he turned in the NAIA’s best jump at 6-10.75 and met the auto mark.

Peter Smith won the steeplechase and met the provisional mark with a school record time of 9:28.8, breaking the tape nearly 21 seconds ahead of the second place athlete (Josh Liester-USF). Smith currently has the 10th fastest time in the NAIA.

Perkins Aiyegbeni finished first in the 400m with a time of 49.26, just ahead of Brennan Dostal from Buena Vista. Tim Rose won the 1500m with a time of 3:57.14, six seconds ahead of Kyle Anderson, a Northwestern Alum who competed unattached.

The 4×100 relay team of Derrick Akers, Nathan Wedel, Brady Butters and Levi TeBrink placed first with a time of 42.58, just ahead of second place Morningside.
