New Men’s and Women’s Assistant Soccer Coach Announced at NCC

Sheldon, Iowa – Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) is excited to welcome Jacob Bonnett as the new Assistant Soccer Coach for both the Men’s and Women’s teams.

Bonnett officially began his role at NCC on April 1st. Coach Bonnett brings nearly two decades of coaching experience to NCC. He began his coaching career in 2006 at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, Oregon—his alma mater—where his passion for developing athletes took root.

He has continued to grow professionally ever since, most recently serving as an Assistant Coach with Warrior FC, a semi-pro club based in Everly, Iowa, and part of the Midwest Premier League, working with both the men’s and women’s squads.

“The best part of coaching is being in a position to help our student-athletes grow into the best version of themselves,” Bonnett explained.

Bonnett’s coaching philosophy is shaped by experience and a growth mindset.

“No matter what happens on the pitch, it’s about personal growth. If you lose, learn from it and get better. If you win, learn from it and get better. Never be content,” Bonnett said.

When it comes to recruitment, Bonnett prioritizes character over raw skill.

“I don’t care how good a prospect is if their attitude is terrible. Attitude is the number one attribute I look for,” he said. “We spend a lot of time together as a team, and I want to surround myself—and our team—with the best people possible.”

NCC’s men’s and women’s soccer teams made their debut in Fall 2024, and Bonnett felt he is stepping into the program during an exciting time of growth and momentum.

“I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year,” Bonnett said. “With a year under the program’s belt and a larger, updated coaching staff, both the Men’s and Women’s teams are gaining momentum. For the Men’s team, we’re introducing a fresh style of play and adding some outstanding recruits to complement our current roster. The Women’s team is also shaping up to be highly competitive, with new players who will challenge and elevate our returners.”

Tre Thomas, Head Soccer Coach for NCC, said he is excited to have Bonnett join the coaching staff.

“Jacob is an outstanding addition to our coaching team. He brings a winning mindset and a real heart for our student-athletes. His experience and approach will be a huge asset as we continue to build something special here,” coach Thomas said.

Eric Francis, Athletic Director at NCC, added: “We’re thrilled to have Jacob on board. His leadership, passion, and focus on character align perfectly with the values of our athletic department. He’s already making a positive impact, and I’m excited to see where he helps take Thunder Soccer next.”

Bonnett said the feeling is mutual.

“Our entire coaching staff is managing both the men’s and women’s sides, which will create a strong bond among us and benefit both programs long term,” he said.

Recruiting efforts are going strong.

“The Men’s roster is nearly full, and we’re actively finalizing the Women’s roster. Things are looking fantastic,” Bonnett noted.

Outside of coaching, Bonnett describes himself as a world traveler and self-proclaimed nerd. He’s visited 40 countries (and counting), considers The Lord of the Rings trilogy a cinematic masterpiece, and holds a deep appreciation for the versatility of pizza—his favorite food.

“I’m just incredibly grateful to be here,” Bonnett said. “Moving into a collegiate coaching role has been my goal for some time, and being able to finally realize it has been an absolute dream come true.”
