Nighthawk – Lynx Quarterfinal Football Preview

Northwest Iowa — Boyden Hull Rock Valley will take a 7-2 record into the Class 3A football quarterfinals when they travel to Webster City Friday. The Lynx are ranked #8 in the  final Radio Iowa Poll. Webster City is 9-0 on the season while the Nighthawks are riding a 6 game winning streak.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley cruised to a 42-7 victory over the Spencer Tigers at Dale Norton field in Spencer in the round of 16 last Friday night. The Nighthawks took their first 4 possessions in for touchdowns almost exclusively using the rushing attack featuring Cade Fisher, Kody Noble, and Landyn Van Kekerix.

Meanwhile in Webster City Sergeant Bluff-Luton rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter but were denied after a late Webster City drive ended with a game-winning score and a 28-21 win for the Lynx on their home field.

A game-tying drive by Sergeant Bluff Luton covered 70-yard in just five plays. It ended on an 8 yard touchdown run  with 5:15 to play.

Webster City’s game-winning drive included a fourth-and-two pass completion to convert from its own 28-yard line and a 33-yard pass from Chase Rattenborg to tight-end J.J. Moore that was fumbled but recovered by a teammate at the SB-L 10.

Trey Mathis got the winning score on a three-yard run with 1:00 left. Sergeant Bluff Luton was able to move the ball to the Webster City 18 in the closing seconds but a desperation pass on the final play was picked off at the goal line.

BHRV Head Coach Cory Brandt said the emergence of a power running game last week was more about riding  success rather than simply going against tendencies.

This time of year it’s all about taking advantage of opportunities.

Brandt feels his Nighthawks are going up against a very complete team in the Lynx.

Webster City Head Coach Bob Howard says the ground work for his teams success was laid all the way back in March.

Howard is impressed with the balance of the Nighthawks and their shape shifting offense.

For the Lynx the keys to a win haven’t changed since the season opener back in August.
