Northwestern Sweeps GPAC Men’s Soccer Honors

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – For the third time this season, the Northwestern College men’s soccer team (11-1-1, 7-0 GPAC) have swept the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) men’s soccer honors as the Raiders continue to stay red hot and unbeaten in league play.

Northwestern went 2-0 on the week with wins over Dakota Wesleyan (4-0) at home and a 1-0 road victory over Midland on Saturday evening.

This week’s Offensive Player of the Week goes to freshman forward Stan van den Beld (Voorhout, Netherlands/Rijnlands Lyceum Sassenheim) for his offensive explosion to keep the Raiders perfect in GPAC play. On the week, he netted two goals and one assist. In the Midland match on Saturday, he scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute for the Raiders. Van den Beld has collecting his first-career GPAC honor.

Marcel Lengert (So., Siegen, Germany/Prince Johann Moritz Gymnasium) was named GPAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season behind a stellar backline defense effort. The sophomore defender was instrumental in the two Raider shutouts this week, his efforts helping keep the Tigers and Warriors off the board.

Northwestern now has won seven straight contests, all in GPAC play. The squad now has six shutouts on the season, five of them being in conference matches.

Northwestern takes to the pitch again tomorrow night against arch-rival Dordt Defenders (2-9-2, 1-5 GPAC) in Sioux Center for an 8:00 p.m. kickoff following the women’s match.
