NWC Softball Wins Two Against Bethany

Atchison, Kansas — The Northwestern College softball team opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep (5-2, 8-6) against Bethany (Kan.) Monday afternoon in Atchinson, Kan.

Northwestern pushes its win streak to four and improves to 7-3 on the season. The Swedes are now 2-6.

Samantha Ubben (W: 3-2) pitched a complete game, five-hitter in leading the Raiders to a 5-2 win in game one. Ubben struck out six, walked two and did not give up an earned run in the full seven innings.

Down 2-0, Northwestern scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate. Bri Giordano led off the inning with a home run, Madysn Grotewold and Alayna Bakke had RBI singles and both Jennifer Boeve and Jordyn Kramer hit run-scoring doubles.

The Raiders totaled nine hits in game one, led by Mouw and Grotewold who both tallied two hits. Boeve, Bakke, Kramer, Giordano and Kameryn Etherington all had one hit each.

Samantha Quezada (L: 0-4) took the loss, giving up all nine hits and five runs in six innings. The Swedes plated both runs in the second on a couple of singles by Kayla Eggly and Brian Rodriguez followed by a Northwestern error.

Emily Bosch went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in leading Northwestern to an 8-6 win in the nightcap. Bosch hit three singles and a double while scoring and driving in a run at the top of the order. Giordano added two hits while Taylor DeJong had a two-run single in hte Raiders four-run, fifth inning.

Northwestern raced out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first and one in the second. Boeve had a two-run single in the first and Grotewold scored a run on a groundout in the second. Bethany came back with four runs in the top of the fourth; Ciera Flores had the big hit, a three-run double with two outs.

Now trailing 5-4, Northwestern went ahead for good with a four-run fifth inning; De Jong had the game-winning hit, a two-run single and Bosch and Sydney Johnson recorded RBI singles in the inning.

Etherington (W: 4-1) picked up her team-leading fourth win, giving up five hits and five runs in five innings. The freshman struck out six. Ubben notched her first save, striking out the side in the top of the seventh.
