Sheldon hosted Rock Valley in a Siouxland Conference basketball doubleheader Tuesday night. The girls game went to Sheldon 60-50 with the boys contest claimed by the Rockets 86-50.
The Orab girls led at all the breaks. They were up 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and pushed that to a 28-18 halftime lead. A strong third quarter put them up 42-29 going into the fourth quarter and Sheldon would celebrate senior night with a 60-50 win.
Sheldon got a game high 19 from Claire Johnson and 17 from senior Maliah Kleinhesselink. Rock Valley put a pair of their freshmen starters in double figures with Tielyr Rozeboom netting 17 and Kavri Van Kekerix hitting for 11.
With the win Sheldon finishes the regular season at 11-11 with a conference mark of 8-10. Rock Valley goes into the tournaments at 3-18 for the year and 3-15 in the Siouxland. Both teams begin the tournaments on Saturday. Sheldon will be at West Lyon in a 3A Region 1 quarterfinal game. Rock Valley will be at West Sioux for a play in game to set the quarterfinals of 2A Region 1.
In the boys game Rock Valley led at all the breaks. They were up 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and 36-27 at the half. A 9-0 run to start the second half ignited the offense and the Rockets went on to win 86-50.
Sheldon had two players in double figures getting a team high 15 from Anthony Provost with all of his scoring coming from behind the arc. Senior Shane Brouwer hit for 10. Rock Valley had four of their five starters in double figures led by Bryson Van Grootheest’s 18 points. Dawson Van Beek hit for 16. Caleb Kats drained four threes as part of a 14 point night. They were joined by Sam Remmerde who added 12 inside.
With the win Rock Valley is 15-5 on the year and 11-4 in the conference. Sheldon goes into the regular season finale at 6-15 with a 4-13 conference mark.
Sheldon will close the regular season Friday night at Okoboji while the Rockets will be at home to Central Lyon.
