Red Raider Women Earn Ninth Straight Win; Down Mount Marty

Orange City, Iowa — The Northwestern College women’s basketball team pushed its win streak to nine games with a 73-50 win over Mount Marty Saturday afternoon at the Bultman Center.

The Raiders sweep the season series against the Lancers and improve to 14-5 in the GPAC, 14-8 overall, while also staying within 1/2 game of second place Concordia in the GPAC standings.

Sammy Blum, one of three Northwestern players in double figures, scored 14 points to lead head coach Chris Yaw’s squad. Molly Schany added 13 points and eight rebounds while Jada Cunningham scored 10 points to go with five assists for the balanced Raiders.

Northwestern outscored the Lancers in every quarter and gradually pulled away from its GPAC rival. The Raiders led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter and used a 7-0 run, finished off with a three-pointer from Jazy Prins, to push their lead to 28-14 with four minutes left in the first half. They held a 35-22 advantage at halftime, shooting 44% from the field and 50% (5/10) from the three-point line.

Another 7-0 run gave the hosts their first 20-point lead, 49-28, after baskets from Emilee Danner, Schany and Blum with four minutes left in the third. Northwestern’s lead stayed around the 20-point margin for the final 14 minutes.

Defense and rebounding continued to be key to the Raiders success as the hosts held Mount Marty to just 33% shooting and outrebounded the Lancers 42-26. Northwestern was efficient on the offensive end, shooting 48% for the game and committed just nine turnovers.

Bailey Kortan led Mount Marty with 17 points, making 4-of-6 three-point attempts; Karlee McKinney netted 14 points and pulled down three rebounds.

Northwestern will host Jamestown on Wednesday night.
