Remsen St. Mary’s Edges Montezuma In 1A Consolations

DES MOINES, Iowa – In its third straight trip to the Class 1A consolation round, St. Mary’s, Remsen picked up its first third-place trophy after a 50-49 win over Montezuma on Thursday morning.

The Hawks (21-7) were led by 14 points from Spencer Schorg and 13 points from Blaine Harpenau. Co-coaches Scott and Justin Schorg’s squad was the first team to appear in three consecutive consolation games since Pomeroy-Palmer from 1991-93, and this week’s roster had no seniors on it.

Montezuma finished fourth in its first tournament appearance since 1990. The Braves missed a potentially game-tying free throw attempt with 1.9 seconds remaining that sealed the final margin. Trey Shearer led the Braves (22-3) with 23 points, while Nolan Ray added 13 points and eight rebounds.
