Remsen St. Mary’s On To 8 Player Title Game Following 108-94 Win

Cedar Falls Iowa — In an extraordinary opener to the Iowa State Football Semifinals Remsen St Mary’s downed Montezuma 108-94 in a score fest unlike any other before it.

Montezuma led 28-21 after the first quarter in what was a sign of things to come. At the half the Braves were up 46-36. By the end of the third quarter it was even at 74-74. Remsen St. Mary’s out scored Montezuma 34-30 in the final 12 minutes to win an incredible Iowa high school playoff game 108-94. The game featured 202 total points and 1,497 yards of total offense between the two teams.

A closer look at some of the team numbers shows Remsen St. Mary’s with 559 yards rushing and 134 passing for a total of 693. Montezuma topped that with 60 yards rushing and 744 passing for a total of 804.

The individual numbers were just as impressive. The Hawks Blaine Harpenau rushed 40 times for 357 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also went 11 of 22 passing for 134 yards and 4 more touchdowns against just 1 interception. All told he accounted for 491 yards of total offense and had a hand in 7 touchdowns.

For Montezuma quarterback Eddie Burgess went 34 of 60 for 689 yards and 9 touchdowns and was intercepted just  once. Trey Shearer was his leading receiver catching 20 balls for 389 yards and 7 touchdowns.

As impossible as it may seen in a game with so much offense defense did play a key roll as Remsen St. Mary’s out scored Montezuma 21-6 in points off turnovers.

With the win the Hawks remain unbeaten at 11-0 and moves on to the 8 player championship game Thursday November 19th at 10:00 am. Montezuma finishes at 10-1 and in disbelief having scored 94 points and not won the game. Opening kick off came at 9:07 in the morning with the game ending at 1:00 pm for a total game time of 4 hours and 1 minute.
