Rock Valley, Iowa – The Sheldon Orabs and Rock Valley Rockets split a Siouxland Conference doubleheader Tuesday night in the Rock Valley. The Orab girls held on for a 56-54 win, and the Rock Valley boys cruised to a 62-19 victory.
The Sheldon girls jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, but Rock Valley responded with an 8-0 run of their own. Sheldon ended the first quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 15-8 lead into the second quarter. The Orabs started the second quarter on a 6-0 run and had a 32-21 lead heading into halftime. Sheldon’s lead remained at 11 heading into the fourth quarter 45-34. Rock Valley would claw their way back, tying the game at 54-54 late, but Maliah Kleinhesselink drilled 2 free throws to put the game away with 2.3 seconds left, giving the Orabs the 56-54 win.
The Orabs went 16/24 from the free throw line and Rock Valley went 4/14.
Sheldon got a game high 24 from Kleinhesselink, and 15 points from Claire Johnson. Rock Valley got a team high 20 points from Kavri Van Kekerix, 14 from Miylie Zomer, and 12 from Tielyr Rozeboom.
With the win Sheldon improves to 5-5 on the year and 3-5 in the Siouxland. Rock Valley falls to 1-8 on the year and in the conference.
The Rock Valley boys started the game off hot on an 11-0 run and cold shooting plagued the Orabs all game. Rock Valley had an 11-5 lead after one. The Rocket defense held Sheldon to just 1 point in the second quarter and Rock Valley had a 28-6 lead at halftime. After three it was 48-17, and Rock Valley came away with the 62-19 win.
Rock Valley had a game high 17 from both Bryson Van Grootheest and Sam Remmerde. Sheldon got a team high 8 from Ryan Vollink.
With the win, Rock Valley improves to 7-1 on the season and 6-1 in the Siouxland. Sheldon falls to 3-6 on the year and 2-5 in the conference.
Up next for Sheldon is a home contest against Okoboji on Friday night.
