Cedar Falls, Iowa — Three interceptions and a fumble proved costly for the Central Lyon/George-Little Rock Lions in the Class 2A Championship at the UNI-Dome Friday afternoon as Waukon came away with their second title in four years.
After an early defensive battle, Waukon got on the board first with a 27-yard scoop and score by Brennan Sweeney to give the Indians an 8-0 lead with 5:28 to go in the opening frame. The Lions responded with a kick off return by Cooper Spiess to the Waukon 34, and the very next play Zach Lutmer found open space and the endzone for the score to pull within one at 8-7.
Waukon got back on the board in the second quarter with Patrick Hennessy scoring from seven yards out to give Waukon a 16-7 lead with 5:40 left in the first half. CLGLR drove down the field late in the half, Lutmer scored from 6 yards out on the bootleg to bring the score to 16-14 at the intermission.
Waukon scored late in the third quarter on a reverse pass by Creed Welch to Braxton Stewart for the 56-yard score. That extended the Waukon lead to 22-14. The Indians iced the game late with an Ethan O’Neill 6 yard run with 1:39 to go in the game to make it 28-14.
Waukon ends the year at 10-1. Central Lyon/George Little-Rock ends the season at 10-1.
