Orange City, Iowa — Unity Christian advanced to the Class 2A Region 1 semifinal Wednesday night in Orange City after defeating Rock Valley 72-63. Unity will take on Central Lyon, who defeated West Sioux 58-43, in Orange City at Unity’s gym Friday night.
The game was deadlocked at 13 a piece after the first quarter, but Unity was able to create some separation in the second quarter and take a 31-24 lead into halftime. Rock Valley was able to get within one point in the third at 37-36, but the Knights went on a 13-0, and had a 50-40 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Rock Valley and Unity traded baskets in the final quarter, and Unity came away with the 72-63 win.
Unity had four players in double figures. The Knights got a game high 21 from Janie Schoonhoven. Jori Bronner added 18, Justine Malenke put in 13, and Corrina Timmermans had 12 points. Rock Valley got a team high eighteen from Emily DeRuyter. Taylor Richter, Lizzy Blum, and Lexie Van Kekerix each had 13 points a piece.
With the win Unity improves to 17-5 on the year, and will take on Central Lyon Friday night in Orange City. Rock Valley ends their year at 15-8.
