Veerbeek Earns First Team All-American Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2021-22 Women’s Basketball All-America Teams. Stephanie Soares of The Master’s (Calif.) was named the 2022 NAIA National Player of the Year and Jeff Hans of Thomas More (Ky.) was named the 2022 NAIA National Coach of the Year.

There were four teams that boast two players in 1st, 2nd or 3rd teams: Westmont (Calif.), Providence (Mont.), Wayland Baptist (Texas), Central Methodist (Mo.) and Morningside (Iowa). Westmont (Calif.) was the only team to have two first-team players. Providence had two players awarded second-team honors. Wayland Baptist had a player awarded first team and the other second team. Morningside had a player awarded first team and the other third team. Central Methodist had a player on first team and then an honorable mention.

Dordt’s Ashtyn Veerbeek was named to the All-America first team. Veerbeek averaged 16.2 points per game during the national tournament with 11.3 rebounds while handing out 3.3 assists and blocking 2.34 shots per game as the Defenders finished as the tournament runner-up. Veerbeek also converted 45 percent of her field goals and recorded four steals. On the season, she had a team high 17.9 points per game, a team leading 115 blocks, 366 totals rebounds, and shot .484 from the field. Veerbeek finished third nationally in total blocks and fifth in total rebounds.

Northwestern’s Molly Schany (So., Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) led the Raiders, who spent most of the season inside the NAIA top-25, in scoring at 13.8 points per game. She also led the team in rebounds with 217, at a clip of 6.6 per contest. A whopping 43% of her rebounds this season were offensive rebounds (94). Additionally, she shot 55.7% from the floor, tallied 45 assists, nine steals, and seven blocks for the Raiders this season.

In Great Plains Athletic Conference play, she sat fifth in field goal percentage, ninth in points per game, and tied for ninth in rebounds per game. She was instrumental in the Raiders’ team shooting percentage of 45.6% which sat 12th in the nation.
