Sheldon, Iowa — West Lyon downed Sheldon 16-9 in Sheldon as both teams wrapped up the regular season. Now it’s on to the tournament on Tuesday.
Sheldon opened the scoring with a 2 run first inning. Makenna Kleinhesselink walked and scored on a ball put in play by Emma Barwick. Barwick scored on a single to center by Payton Lode.
West Lyon took a 5-2 lead in the third as they plated 5 runs. Taylor Rentschler, Zavyr Metzger, Madison DeJong, Issabella Heyer and Hayley Knobloch would all reach and score. The big blow was a 3 run homer to left center by Knoblock.
Sheldon made it 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the third as Tori Elgersma reached on a bunt single and later scored from second on a single up the middle by Lode.
West Lyon went up 6-3 in the top of the fourth as Mallory Gramstad walked and later scored from third on a sac fly to center by Kennedy Kramer.
Sheldon picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth as Reese Strouth reached on a bunt single and scored on a single up the middle by Barwick to make it 6-4 in favor of the Wildcats.
West Lyon broke it open with a 5 run fifth inning keyed by a 3 run homer to left by Kennedy Kramer. That scored Randi Childress and Taylor Rentschler ahead of her. Also scoring in the inning were Heyer and Shay Langenhorst as the Wildcats moved in front 11-4.
West Lyon added 5 more in the 6th inning keyed by a 2 run homer by Childress that made it 14-4. As a team the trio of home runs put the season total at 20 for the Wildcats with 5 different players going deep.
Sheldon scored 5 in the bottom half of the inning to send the game into the 7th inning at 16-9. Keeley Simonson, Reese Strouth, Makenna Kleinhesselink, Barwick and Elgersma reached and scored with Elgersma driving in a pair of runs to lead the way.
With no further scoring the final was 16-9 in favor of West Lyon. With the win the Wildcats are 17-7 on the year and 10-4 in the conference. Sheldon heads to the playoffs with an 18-3 record and 11-3 Siouxland Conference mark.
Sheldon will open at home Tuesday against Algona in the upper bracket of 3A Region 1. West Lyon opens at home in the bottom half of the bracket against Spirit Lake.
