Western And ELC Split Conference Doubleheader

Hull, Iowa — The Western Christian Wolfpack split a pair of Lakes Conference basketball games on Tuesday night in Hull. The ELC girls gave head coach Don Martindale his 300th with a 59-29 win, and the Western boys avenged their only loss on the season by beating the Midgets 69-58.

The Midgets would jump out with two quick runs of 6-0 and 9-0 en route to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter. ELC continued to stay in front 36-17 heading into the half. It was 53-25 heading into the fourth and Estherville Lincoln Central would come away with the 59-29 win.

ELC got a game high 21 points from both Jaydan Nitchals and Haylee Stokes. Western Christian got a team high 9 points from Shayla Van Beek.

With the win ELC improves to 13-2 on the year and 5-0 in the Lakes. Western falls to 4-10 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

ELC started the boys game hot jumping out to an early 8-0 lead, but Western would claw their way back to tie it a 15-15 heading into the second quarter. A 6-0 run in the second quarter helped Western pull away 35-22 heading into halftime. Western would maintain a double digit lead in the third, leading 52-37 going into the final 8 minutes. ELC could only get as close as 8 points in the fourth and Western went on to win 69-58.

Western got a game high 20 points from Wyatt Gulker, 18 points from Ty Van Essen, and 11 from Tate Van Regenmorter. THe Midgets were led in scoring by Ryan Schiltz with 18. Owen Larson put in 14 points.

With the win, Western improves to 12-1 on the year and 2-1 in the Lakes. The Midgets fall to 9-4 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.

Up next for Western is a home contest against Spencer on Friday, January 21st.
