Hull Iowa — Western Christian opened the softball playoffs with a 7-2 home win over Lawton Bronson Monday night. With the win the Wolfpack advance to the Class 2A Region 4 quarterfinals on Wednesday against #15 West Sioux who received a first round bye. The contest will have a 5pm first pitch at Open Space Park in Sioux Center.
Western opened the scoring with a 2 run first inning. Lead off hitter Kayla Zevenbergen opened with a double. Tori Wynja followed with single. Zevenbergen scored on a single to center by Chandler Schemper with Wynja crossing the plate on a single to right by Hannah Jansma as the Wolfpack took an early 2-0 lead.
Lawton Bronson got on the board in the top of the third as Heyley Williams singled and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk by Cali Arens to cut the lead to 2-1. The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the 4th as Makayla Miller singled and scored on a double to the right field corner by Brooklyn Roder.
Western regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the 5th inning as Chandler Schemper reached on an error and scored on another error with the ball put in play by Cassie Van Otterloo.
The Wolfpack put 4 insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the 6th as Madison Vis, Zevenbergen, Wynja, Schemper and Jadyn Faber all reached and scored. The key hits were a 2 run singles by Wynja and Van Otterloo. Western held Lawton Bronson scoreless in the top of the 7th to earn the 7-2 win.
Western is on to the quarterfinals with a 10-13 record while Lawton Bronson ends the year at 10-22. Western will move on to the quarterfinals on Wednesday with a 5pm game at Sioux Center against West Sioux.
