Western Falls to North Union in 2A Girls Region 1 Final

Hartley Iowa — #10 North Union upset #4 Western Christian 50-48 in the Class 2A Region 1 Girls basketball title game at the Hartley Melvin Sanborn Gym Wednesday night. The Wolfpack had tied the game at 48-48 with time running out in the fourth quarter North Union held for the final shot and a desperation hook shot by Hallie Reese made the Warriors a winner 50-48 as the buzzer sounded. From just inside the arc on the right wing Reese’s shot went high off the glass and in to send North Union to the State Tournament.

It was a magic night for the Warriors. A team that hit 102-of-289 three point shots on the year had 12 spread through out contest. That turned out to be the difference as five players hit from beyond the arc. At the end of the first quarter North Union went up 21-10 on a buzzer beating three from Samantha Hagedorn. At the half the lead was 32-22. At the end of the third Western had fought back to trim the lead to 39-36. In the fourth the comeback became complete as the score was tied numerous times in the final quarter but North Union never gave up the lead. On the game winner by Reese the final score was 50-48 in favor of North Union.

Only two players hit double figures with Ashtyn Veerbeek finishing her career with a 29 point night. Her line included 11 at halftime and a 10 point fourth quarter as the Wolfpack mounted the comeback. Hallie Reese led the Warriors with 16 points.

With the win North Union is on to the State Tournament with a 21-2 record. Western sees an amazing run of success come to an end with 6 straight trips to the State Tournament. The Wolfpack end the year with a 22-3 record.
