Second Ranked MOC Floyd Valley Girls Basketball Team to Play For Region Title

MOC logoMOC Floyd Valley advanced to the Girls 3A Region 1 finals with a 78-45 home win over Cherokee Wednesday night. The Lady Dutch will play South Central Calhoun for the Region Title and a return trip to the State Tournament on Saturday night in Cherokee. South Central Calhoun advanced with a 62-55 win over East Sac County.

MOC Floyd Valley opened u pa 21-16 first quarter lead and were up by 13 points at halftime 38-25. The Lady Dutch erupted to outscore Cherokee 22-13 in the third quarter to put the game away eventually winning 78-45.

Katie Landhuis scored a game high 22 points including five three-point buckets. Alexis Conaway added 18 points and Rylee Yaw joined them in double figures with 13 points. A total of 10 players found their way into the scorebook for the Lady Dutch.

Cherokee got a team high 13 points from senior Megan Hummel. Freshman Kaely Hummel hit for a dozen and Megan Carlson pumped in 10 points.

With the win MOC Floyd Valley ranked number two in the latest 3A poll improve to 22-1 on the season while Cherokee ends the year at 8-15.

In the finals of Class 3A Region 2 it will be Spirit Lake meeting Garner Hayfield in the finals for a State Tournament trip. Spirit Lake advanced with a hard fought 59-56 win over Sioux Center while Garner Hayfield moved on with a 49-35 win at Osage. The Region 2 title game will be played at Algona this Saturday night.

BasketballClass 3A Girls basketball semi-finals were played around the state of Iowa Wednesday evening, with the winners advancing to the District Finals this Saturday evening.

BHRV Wrestlers Finish 7th at State Dual Team Tournament

nighthawk logoThe Iowa State Wrestling Tournament opened a four day run in Des Moines Wednesday with the Dual Team Tournament. Boyden Hull Rock Valley represented the area in Class 2A. The Nighthawks who were the number seven seed fell to second seed Davenport Assumption 60-18 in the first round.

The Nighthawks 18 points came on pins. Getting falls were Marcus Jones at 170 pounds in 1:19, Ty Koldenhoven at 195 in 3:18 and Tyler Dolieslager at 220 in a time of 2:43.

From there it was on to the Consolation Semis where Boyden Hull Rock Valley met six seed Union La Porte City and were defeated 44-30. Getting wins for the Nighthawks were Marcus Jones at 170 with a fall in 2:52. At 182 Dallas Rozeboom won a 6-5 decision. At 195 Ty Koldenhoven won by fall in 1:40. At 220 Tyler Dolieslager recorded a pin in 3:51 and at 106 Samuel Klarenbeek recorded a pin in 1:17.

The Nighthawks faced Ballard for the 7th place match, winning by a 40-27 final to capture 7th place in the 2A Tournament. Getting pins for the Nighthawks were Dallas Rozeboom at 182 in :27 seconds, Ty Koldenhoven at 195 in :37 seconds, Tyler Dolieslager at 220 in 2:38, Gregory Palma at 285 in 1:42, Samuel Klarenbeek at 106 in 1:17 and Hunter Berkenpas at 152 in 3:08.

Boyden Hull Rock Valley finishes the year at 26-4 in dual meets. Along the way they won the Siouxland Conference title along with the Section Team Title and won their way through the Regional Dual Team Competition to earn their trip to State.

Individual competition at Wells Fargo Arena begins on Thursday and once again the KIWA listening area is sending a strong contingent to the State Tournament.

Western Christian Rolls Into 2A Region 1 Girls Semifinals

western logoTop ranked Western Christian moved on to the Class 2A Region 1 semifinals with a 68-22 home win over Rock Valley Tuesday night. the defending State Champions will host South O’Brien in the lower bracket match up on Friday night in Hull. South O’Brien advanced with a 42-41 quarterfinal home win over Boyden Hull.

The Wolfpack opened with a flurry leading 20-0 at the end of the first half and never looked back. They were up 44-9 at halftime and went on to win it 68-22. a total of 10 players found their way into the scorebook and as a team Western knocked down 9 three-point buckets as a team.

Jamie Geesink was the games top scorer with 16 off the bench. Brooke Wolterstorff and Erika Douma added 11 points each. Rock Valley was led by Kensey Vande Hoef with nine points.

With the win Western Christian improves to 21-1 on the year while the Rockets close the season at 9-13.

Western will host South O’Brien Friday night and we’ll bring you the broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3 with pregame getting underway at 6:45. In the upper bracket Okoboji will host the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal between Emmetsburg and North Union.
The Semifinals are set in Class 1A Region 1 following quarterfinal play Tuesday night. in the upper bracket West Sioux won a 49-42 home game over Remsen St Mary’s. West Sioux will meet West Bend Mallard who posted a 54-39 win over Storm Lake St Mary’s in a game played at Laurens. The upper bracket semifinal will be played at Hartley.

In the lower bracket of 1A Region 1 George Little Rock will meet top ranked Central Lyon in the semis at Rock Rapids. G-LR advanced with a 50-17 home win over Clay Central Everly while Central Lyon won a 75-37 home contest against Harris Lake Park.
