Latest Northwest Iowa Fishing Report As Of 4/19/12

Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake)

Fishing has been pretty slow at Storm Lake. Walleye – Slow: Anglers are catching a few walleye but the action has not been real fast. The point off the north side of the marina has been producing some walleye. Boaters should use caution on Storm Lake. The hydraulic dredge is in operation in the east basin of the lake. There is a pipeline running from the dredge to the shoreline and may rise to the surface at times.

Big Spirit Lake

Walleye and musky season is closed. Panfish are being caught off the North Grade and Templar Park. A few smallmouth bass along with white bass may be caught on rock piles in various parts of the lake. Bullhead – Fair: A few bullheads have are being caught off the north grade and templar park as well as a few other places around the lake. Northern Pike – Fair: Try using spoons, and spinner baits around vegetation. Largemouth Bass – Slow: A few largemouth bass have moved in to pre-spawn areas around the lake.

 East Okoboji Lake

Walleye and musky season is closed. Bullhead – Fair: Try using worms on bottom. Yellow Bass – Good: Many yellow bass are being caught try looking for rocks and wood and use small baits.

 Minnewashta Lake

Yellow Perch – Fair: Some perch are being caught try using small jigs and tipped with worm. A few yellow bass and bluegills may be caught at the same time.

West Okoboji Lake

Walleye and musky season is closed. As the deepest lake in the chain, its water is not warming up as fast as the other lakes but is still ahead of normal. Panfish and largemouth bass are being caught in the canals as well as in some of the bays. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass may be caught near docks and there outskirts a few white bass and northern pike may be picked up at the same time.

With cooler temperatures last week and over the weekend, the water has cooled a bit and fishing has slowed down but should pick back up as the weather improves.


Area Sports Officials To Be Honored April 28th

A total of 158 officials are scheduled to receive awards at the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s 18th Annual Officials’ Banquet and Recognition Ceremony, Saturday, April 28th at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.

The list of honoree includes five officials who each have 50 years of service. Those officials are Ronald Smith from George, Charles Adair of Mondamin; Terry Curtis from Williamsburg; Richard McMahon of Latimer; Robert Nystrom from Havelock.

Area officials being recognized for 15 years of service will be Dave Van Essen of Sheldon, Brad Te Grootenhuis of Hospers, Cory E. Spangler of LeMars and Kevin Vander Ploeg of Sioux Center. Spangler was also named the NFOA State Official of the Year for Baseball.

Area officials with 25 years of service include Douglas Stubbe of George, Cory Isebrand of LeMars and Steve Rhode of Spencer. 35-Year Honorees include Al Van Wyhe of Hawarden.

Iowa Sharks To Host Fan Day On Saturday April 21st

The 3 time champion Iowa Sharks will be hosting a media and fan day on Saturday, April 21st at their home field The Shark Tank in Sutherland.

Over 25 talented new faces appeared at the tryouts and some good talent joined the team. Players showing their skills came from places like Morningside, Northwestern, Buena Vista, Briar Cliff, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, and many others.

The Sharks are hungry to bring another title to Northwest Iowa. Fans are invited to come out to Sutherland and meet the new players and returning players. A free will donation meal will be provided by the Sharks as well as a raffle and opportunities to score team merchandise. Bring your questions and the Sharks will bring their answers.

The Sharks kick the season off at home against the Sioux Falls Stallions on Saturday May 5th. The Full schedule is available online at

Dordt, Northwestern Both Sweep Softball Double-Headers

Kacy Oberfoell scattered four hits in a strong pitching performance and the Dordt College Defender softball team scored two late runs to forge a 2-1 win in game one of its doubleheader with the Briar Cliff Chargers on Wednesday night in Sioux Center.

In game 2, an error marred contest, the Defender used the long ball to overcome a six defensive errors to win a 9-4 decision from Briar Cliff.

Dordt is now 9-5 in the GPAC and 19-17 overall. Briar Cliff slips to 10-14 overall and 3-9 in the GPAC.

Keely Bracelin won her seventh straight decision and improved to 11-4 with a complete game five hitter as Northwestern downed Mount Marty 6-0 in the first game of a double-header played Wednesday night in Orange City. Erica VandeHoef belted a two-run home run in the sixth, her first collegiate home run, and Alex Price had a two run single.

In the nightcap, Katie VandeVoort won her team-best 12th decision (12-4) and pitched her third straight shutout in giving up six hits in game two. Both Kami Kuhlmann and Lindsey Remien hit solo home runs in the 4-0 win.

Northwestern has won eight straight games and improved to 11-1 in the GPAC, 25-10 overall.

Hershey Track and Field Meet

The Sheldon Hershey Track and Field Meet will be held on Friday, May 4th from 3:30 to 5:30 Pm at the Sheldon High School track.

Pre-Registration is preferred but they will take registrations the day of the event.

This event is for boys and girls ages 9-14 as of 12/31/2012.
