High School Basketball Pairings For Friday, January 25th

A full slate of girl/boy basketball double-headers in northwest Iowa tonight features Sheldon at MOC-Floyd Valley.  When the two schools met at the O-rena back on December 11th, they split the twin bill.  The Dutch girls won their game 59-23, before the Orab boys outlasted the Dutch 44-42 in a nail-biter.

College Basketball Scoreboard from Wednesday, January 23rd

BasketballSioux Center, Iowa — Dordt College found themselves on the short end of a lopsided GPAC tilt  falling 91-42 to the third ranked Morningside Mustangs. The Mustangs improve to 19-4 on the season and 11-3 in the Great Plains Athletics Conference while the Defenders fall to 13-11 on the year and 7-7 in conference play.

An 8-0 run to start the second half allowed the Dordt College men to turn a six point halftime lead into a 14 point advantage and the Morningside Mustangs would get no closer than eight the rest of the way as the Defenders grabbed a 89-68 GPAC win at home. Dordt College improves to 18-5 overall and 10-4 in the conference while the Mustangs fall to 11-13 this year and 6-8 in GPAC play.



Orange City, Iowa —  The 9th-ranked Northwestern Red Raider Women’s basketball team posted a 87-75 win over 7th ranked Briar Cliff. The Red Raider women improve to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the GPAC. Briar Cliff falls to 18-5 overall and 9-4 in the GPAC.

The Red Raiders completed the sweep of the Chargers when the 8th ranked NWC men defeated Briar Cliff 88-77. NWC moves to 16-5 overall, 10-3 in the GPAC. Briar Cliff slides to 16-7 overall, 7-6 in the GPAC.

Sheldon Splits Basketball Doubleheader at Rock Valley

Orab-LogoThe Sheldon Orabs and Rock Valley Rockets split a conference basketball doubleheader in Rock Valley Tuesday night. The girls game went to the Rockets 51-44 while the Orabs took the boys game 75-49.

In the girls game the Rockets went up 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and led 28-21 at halftime. A strong third quarter pulled Sheldon to within 33-32 before Rock Valley put it away at the free throw line in the fourth quarter going 8-of-10 as a team. The final would be 51-44.

Sheldon got a game high 19 points from Krista Bousema as she hit 9 field goals including 1 three-pointer. The Rockets put three players in double figures getting a team high 18 from Monserrat Figueroa, 14 from Kensy Vande Hoef and 11 more from Joanna Heemstra.

With the win Rock Valley improves to 6-8 in the conference and 7-8 for the season. Sheldon falls to 5-9 in the conference and 5-11 for the season.

In the boys game that followed Sheldon trailed 20-19 at the first quarter as the Rockets pumped in a trio of three-pointers. Three more fell in the second quarter but the Orabs had enough fire power of their own to take a 33-31 halftime lead. In the third quarter outscored the Rockets 18-6 to pull in front 51-37 as they went on to win it 75-49.

Sheldon put four of the five starters in double figures getting a game high 23 from Dallas Ennema including 17 in the second half. Chris Balster had 14 points on the night with Matt Dykstra and James Gradert hit for 13 points each. The Rockets responded with three players in double figures led by Jerod Hanson with 15, Scott Westra with 12 and Brendon Harberts with 10 points.

With the win Sheldon moves to 12-1 in the Siouxland and 15-1 on the season. The Rockets are now 7-6 in the conference and 9-6 for the season.

Up next for Sheldon will be a trip to MOC Floyd Valley for a doubleheader Friday while the Rockets are on the road at Okoboji.
