GPAC Basketball From Saturday January 19th

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team moved over the .500 mark in GPAC play with an 80-63 victory over the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves Saturday afternoon in the De Witt Gymnasium. The Defenders move to 7-6 in conference play and 13-10 overall with the victory while the ‘Wolves drop to 3-15 on the season and 1-12 in conference play.

Morningside is up next on the Dordt College women’s basketball schedule as the Mustangs travel to Sioux Center on Wednesday, January 23 for a Great Plains Athletic Conference contest scheduled for a 6 pm tip-off.

Meanwhile, the Dordt College men’s basketball team used a dominating second half performance to turn a six point halftime lead into a 97-68 blow-out win over Nebraska Wesleyan in GPAC play Saturday afternoon, extending their season win/loss record to 17-5 overall, and 9-4 in the GPAC Conference.

Morningside is up next on the Dordt men’s schedule as the Mustangs travel to Sioux Center on Wednesday, January 23 for a Great Plains Athletic Conference contest scheduled for an 8 pm tip-off.

Orabs Split Home Doubleheader With Okoboji

Orab Varsity Boys BB 2012The Sheldon Orabs split a home basketball doubleheader with Okoboji Friday night. the girls game went to overtime tied at 54-54 with the Pioneers pulling out a 62-57 win. in the boys game Sheldon rolled to a 73-29 win.

In the girls game Sheldon led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and was up 30-26 at halftime as Mackenzie Radke scored on a put back as time expired. At the end of the third quarter Okoboji had taken a 42-41 lead. The game went back and fourth in the final quarter with regulation ending with a 54-54 score.

In the overtime Megan Peschong scored a pair of field goals to go with 3-of-4 free throw shooting and Skylar Hanson added a field goal. Sheldon scoring came from a 3-of-4 performance at the line from Krista Bousema.

Peschong scored a game high 22 points with all of them coming in the second half and overtime. Also in double figures were Hanson with 17 and Emily Wintz with 12.

Bousema led Sheldon with 19 points. Audrey Gustafson hit for a dozen. With the win Okoboji improves to 9-4 in the conference and 11-4 on the season. Sheldon stands at 5-8 in the conference and 5-10 for the season.

In the boys game Sheldon opened a 17-9 first quarter lead that swelled to 36-20 at halftime as James Gradert scored 10 of his 18 points in the second quarter. In the third quarter behind a 10 point effort from Dallas Ennema the Orabs outscored the Pioneers 20-1 in the quarter to lead 56-21 at the end of three quarters. With the bench cleared in the fourth quarter Sheldon would go on to win 73-29.

Sheldon got a game high 18 points from Gradert and 15 in the ballgame from Ennema. Dalton Syverson led Okoboji with 8 points. With the win Sheldon moves to 11-1 in the conference and 14-1 for the season. Okoboji slips to 3-9 in the Siouxland and 3-11 for the year.

Up next for Sheldon will be a trip to Rock Valley for a doubleheader Tuesday night. then it’s on to MOC Floyd Valley on Friday.

Michael Den Herder to Continue Basketball Career at Dordt

PrintMichael Den Herder, a senior at Western Christian High School has announced his intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender basketball program.

Den Herder, a 6-4, 185 pound forward, is averaging 16.5 points per game for Western along with 4.9 rebounds, three assists and one steal per contest. As a junior he averaged 10.5 points, 2.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 4.7 rebounds.

Den Herder was a part of a Class 2A state title runner-up in 2011 and claimed academic all-state honors in football this fall and was an all-district honorable mention pick in football.

Michael is the son of Kirk and Diane Den Herder of Sioux Center, Iowa.


Michael Grady to Play Baseball at Dordt

PrintMichael Grady, a senior at Spalding Catholic High School has announced his intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender baseball program.

Grady, an outfielder and pitcher, was 7-0 on the mound last season with a 0.58 earned run average with 55 strikeouts in 60 innings of work.  He was a first-team all-district player in 2012 and was a first-team honoree by the Northwest Iowa Review.  Grady has played for Legion Post 662 and was a member of a state runner-up team.  Grady helped Spalding to a 2010 District Championship.

Michael is the son of Harvey and Barbara Grady of Granville, Iowa.  He plans to study engineering at Dordt College.
